Qualities of a Good Babysitter
73Patience: You have to have tons of patience when you babysit. There will be times when you want to scream but you need to stay calm. Patience is a virtue and a good babysitter must have it. Just take a deep breath when things start getting under your skin and just act responsibly and calmly and things will work out. Testing your patience will happen regularly as a babysitter but you need to learn to deal with these situations.
Reliability: You have to be able to have time in your schedule to babysit. If you are busy with homework, extracurricular school activities, and community programs than perhaps babysitting isn’t right for you. Don’t say you will take on a babysitting job if you have other commitments. Also don’t accept a babysitting job and then not show up. You will not only lose babysitting jobs from that family but also from all their friends they tell. Being reliable is a huge quality a babysitter needs to have.
Love for children: A good babysitter needs to love being around children. If you don’t particularly care for children than babysitting is definitely not something you should choose to do. When babysitting you’re around kids all the time, so you need to be able to have fun with them. If you have a genuine love for children than babysitting will be a great experience not only for you but also for the children that you sit for.
Enthusiasm: Babysitting clients are going to have a lot more fun with a babysitter who shows any real joy or passion for what they are doing. By being enthusiastic you are showing babysitting clients that you are there for them and are will to have fun with them. Enthusiasm helps make babysitting jobs more fun for both you and your clients.
Mature: Taking care of kids is a big job and you have to be mature enough to handle any situations that may come up. Knowing how to act in emergency situations is key as you need to be able to handle the situation as well as to stay calm so that the kids you are babysitting for don’t get scared. If you don’t feel like you can handle mature situations then perhaps you need to wait a while before you begin babysitting.
Honesty: As a babysitter you need to be honest and trustworthy. If a parent doesn’t think they can trust you then you will not be sitting for them. Be honest and follow all the rules that are laid forth for you by the parents. If you gain their trust and understanding then you will be invited back over and over again to babysit for their children.
Knowledgeable about children: In order to take care of children you need to know the basics about childcare. Do you know how to change a diaper? Are you aware of how to feed a baby? If you don’t know these simple things then taking a babysitting class would be ideal for you. Knowing the basics about children will make your job easier and will help ease the parents minds about leaving their children in your hands.
Care: You need to care about the kids you are watching. Get to know them on a more personal basis by asking them questions such as, “What are you doing in school?” or “What kind of hobbies do you have?” By asking questions you will gain a better understanding of the children you are working with and you will show the children and their parents that you genuinely care about them. The simple act of showing you care shows the parents that you are a good fit for their children. If you genuinely care about your babysitting kids it will make each babysitting job easier and more comfortable for both you and the children.
